“I’ve become more aware of how different people are living and that not every meal is guaranteed.”
“A Box Looks Simple From The Outside.”

What began as a simple family tradition of giving back has evolved into a deep, personal commitment to making a global impact for one young man.
Longtime Kids Around The World volunteer and partner, Luke, is in the process of applying to colleges—which, of course, means writing essays. For his application, he chose to share about a cause close to his heart, one where he has made an incredible impact—and in return, has been profoundly impacted himself.

We also had the chance to dive deeper with Luke, reflecting on his experiences with KATW. His thoughtful insights and inspiring responses are a testament to the power of serving others and the ripple effect it creates.

Q: Your family’s initial motivation to get involved was to give back during the holidays. How has that evolved over the years?
A: Our first goal was simply to find a service opportunity that my sister and I, as young kids, could participate in. Many volunteer programs had age restrictions, but through our friends, we discovered KATW and packed our first meals in 2010. Over time, my motivation grew. What started as a holiday tradition became a passion—I realized we weren’t just packing meals, we were changing lives. That realization pushed me to take on a bigger role in organizing these events.
Q: Can you describe a moment during an event that deeply impacted you?
A: Packing meals during COVID (2020 and 2021) was eye-opening. Despite the challenges, people still wanted to help. Seeing friends and neighbors step up in a time of crisis reminded me of the deep desire people have to support others, even when the world feels uncertain.
Q: What have you learned about leadership through organizing and participating in these events?
A: Leadership comes in many forms, and anyone can be a leader. Whether it’s table leaders explaining how to pack meals, volunteers motivating each other, or speakers sharing the importance of our work, every role contributes to making an impact. True leadership is about collaboration and inspiring others to take action.
Q: How has making a global impact helped you grow, and what advice would you give to other young people?
A: It has broadened my perspective. It’s easy to be caught up in our own daily struggles, but service reminds us of the bigger picture. My advice? Start small. Helping a neighbor, doing a simple act of kindness—these small gestures can lead to bigger change.
Q: Do you plan to continue your commitment to service in college and beyond?
A: Absolutely. I’m excited to introduce KATW to my college community—there are so many student groups looking for meaningful ways to give back. Long-term, I want to work for a company that values service and, one day, continue the tradition with my own family, just as my parents did for me.

We’re grateful for Luke’s character and his example of giving freely of yourself to serve others!Â
And, we’re thankful for donors and partners that encourage and support young leaders, like Luke, who are impacting lives and creating a brighter future for other young people around the world!
