When Giving, Gives Back

The Surprising Truth About Volunteering

When you picture volunteering, you might imagine giving freely of your time, energy, compassion — to make life better for others. But something unexpected happens:

The impact you give always gives back to you.

Packing meals for hungry kids. Tearing out a donated playground. Refurbishing equipment in our warehouse. Traveling overseas to build and play. In all this, one thing is certain. Volunteers walk away with more than they came with:

New perspective, new friendships, and a deeper sense of purpose.

All Kinds of Hands, One Big Heart

One of our favorite things about KATW volunteers is how varied they are — and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

A mom showing her kids what kindness looks like. A teenager surprised to find serving is actually fun. A retiree discovering new skills — and new stories — in the warehouse. Perhaps a CEO trading their suit for work gloves or two friends who decide their next hangout should mean something.

This unique mix of ages, backgrounds, and abilities creates something beautiful: a family of volunteers united by FOOD, PLAY, and STORY that delivers…more.

What Volunteers Didn’t See Coming

When we asked them how serving with KATW has impacted them, their stories were as unique as they are.

“This kind of work gives you a different motivation than a normal job. I hope some of that is rubbing off on me. I’ve learned new skills, stayed active, and been amazed at how hard everyone works.

Mike, retiree faithfully serving in our warehouse and on play tear outs

“Volunteering gave me a deeper understanding of gratitude and joy.  It truly shifted my perspective and reminded me how much love can be shared through simple acts of service. I felt like I was part of something so much bigger… something that’s truly making a lasting difference.”

Emily, young adult seeking purpose beyond herself

“My definition of vacation has changed. The people and the kids with KATW… they keep me coming back. It’s hard to describe — watching my teenage son cry with laughter as 100 children swarmed the playground the moment the ribbon was cut.”

Why It’s Worth It

Different ages. Different reasons. Different strengths. That’s what we love.

Volunteering changes more than the lives we serve. It changes us. You pour out — yet become full. Part of something far bigger than yourself.

It’s the unexpected point of when giving, gives back.
