The Gift Of Being SEEN

It was just a regular community visit, but it felt different. Usually, I am surrounded by the energy of short-term teams from North America, but not so this time.
I was stopping by a public school to inspect a playground we had built months prior. My mind was loud, cluttered with logistics and to-do lists… but the moment the school bell rang, the world around me shifted. As the doors flew open for recess, a flood of energy poured into the yard.
Before I could even process the scene, I felt a sudden impact. One of the students had sprinted full speed right up to me and wrapped his arms around my waist in a tight hug.

I froze for a second. I recognized his face from the days we spent building the playground, but we hadn’t interacted much back then. I was standing there, trying to process why he remembered me or why he chose to hug me, when he suddenly grabbed my hand.
He pulled me eagerly toward the playground entrance, eyes wide with urgency. “WATCH!” he commanded.
He didn’t wait for an answer. He scrambled up the steps, ran to the top of the biggest slide, and right before he sat down, he yelled out, “HEY!”
He needed to be absolutely sure I was looking. As soon as his eyes locked with mine, he slid down, beamed with pride, ran back to me, and gave me another hug.

For the next 20 minutes – which became some of the favorite minutes of my life – I didn’t think about my schedule. I just watched.
He played, he ran, he jumped. And every single time, he paused to make sure I was watching. He would pull me closer to his area, ensuring I had a front-row seat to his joy.
In that moment, my busy thoughts vanished. I looked at him and remembered what it felt like to be a kid—that deep, universal desire to simply be seen. To have someone on the sidelines cheering just for you.
It felt like God was gently reminding me not to lose focus on what truly matters. That He is present in the child who needs to be seen, and that the work of the Kingdom often looks different than the tasks that fill our schedules.
That day, I got to be that person for him.

I saw again that this wasn’t just another playground—it was an oasis. A place where children are free to play, to just be kids, and to feel safe enough to trust. Safe enough to run up to someone they barely know and believe they will be cared for. In so many ways, it reflected what God does for us—holding our lives securely in Him.
It wasn’t about the construction or the logistics anymore. It was about the connection. A playground is just concrete, slides, and metal until a child feels safe enough to play on it. Big builds and big events create opportunity, but it’s moments like this—quiet, personal, often unseen—where real connection happens. Without them, even the best project can feel empty.

And for those who pray, give, and partner with us – this is where your impact lives. Jesus worked miracles up close, and He also worked powerfully from a distance. As part of the Body of Christ, you are doing the same. God is at work here through your prayers and generosity, even when you’re not physically present.
Many things go unseen when we don’t slow down. But when we stop and truly watch, we realize God is already moving and inviting us to be part of it.
